SINGAPORE: Police say the riot in Little India which broke out on Sunday night took place after a fatal accident between a bus and a person at the junction of Race Course Road and Hampshire Road.
The accident took place at 9.23pm on Sunday.
In a statement, police said a riot broke out shortly after the accident, involving a crowd of about 400 people.
Five police vehicles and one ambulance were damaged as a result.
Several other private vehicles were also damaged.
Ten officers were also injured in the riot.
Police say the Special Operations Command and Gurkha Contingent were called to the scene.
Police added that the situation is under control.
Residents in Little India are advised to remain indoors while police operations are ongoing.
The public is advised to stay away from the affected area.
Members of the public are also advised to stay calm and not to speculate on this incident.
In a statement, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister, Teo Chee Hean said: "This is a serious incident which has resulted in injuries and damage to public property. The situation is now under control. Police will spare no efforts to apprehend the subjects involved in the riot."
Police say further updates will be given when available.
Members of the public with any information of the riot are advised to call the police at 1800-2550000.

The riot broke out after a fatal traffic accident occurred at 9:23 Sunday night between a private bus and a person at the junction of Race Course Road and Hampshire Road, police said.
To control the riot, police said they activated resources from Special Operations Command and Gurkha Contingent to the scene.
The Singapore Police Force tweeted at 11:47pm Sunday evening that a riot was ongoing at Race Course Road and Hempshire Road and that police are at the scene.
They advised the public to stay away from the area. Little India is a popular hangout and meeting place, especiall on Sunday night, with Singapore's sizeable workforce of foreign labourers from South Asia.
Photos showed an ambulance had been set on fire and police cars had been overturned by an angry mob.
Rioters were seen throwing bottles and other things at police officers.
The Straits Times reported that the rioting by mainly foreign workers started after a bus hit a Bangladeshi worker.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted at 9:25pm Sunday to a road traffic accident in the area. Upon arrival, they saw a man trapped under a bus and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
SCDF said while rescuers were extricating the body using hydraulic rescue equipment, projectiles were thrown at the personnel.
A total of 18 people, including four SCDF personnel, were sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital as a result.
The riot raised concerns among people in Singapore about safety in the city state and how such incidents could be prevented.
On Yahoo Singapore's Facebook page, Ricky Woon commented: "This matter is under control but the underlying issues are not solve(d). If things continue to be this way and we are being complacent, when things happen again it could be our last chance to react. Will you guys want our country to be back to how it is and sleep in peace?"
News of the riot quickly spread on social media as well, triggering a flurry of tweets and posts about the turn of events in usually peaceful Singapore.

连街头示威都罕见的新加坡周日(12月8日)晚发生暴乱,警方逮捕27名南亚裔的肇事者。
事件发生在“小印度”。那里是早期印度移民在新加坡生活的族裔社区,目前是旅游景点,也来自印度和孟加拉客工喜欢在周末聚集的地方。
警方平息暴乱后在9日凌晨1:30分(同北京时间)召开记者会,将事件列为“持武器的严重暴乱”,并证实事件因一名来自印度的33岁男子在8日晚上9:23分遭一辆私人巴士撞死后而引起。
全国震惊
暴乱震惊全国,让不少新加坡人感到不安。总理李显龙在脸书(Facebook)上表示,无论什么原因都不能构成如此暴力、具破坏性以及犯罪行为的理由。他誓言缉拿肇事者并严厉对付他们,同时也促所有新加坡人保持冷静。
警方也透露共出动300名警员迅速平息暴乱,涉及的400人皆来自南亚裔背景,而肇祸的新加坡司机正协助警方调查。
民防部队表示,救护人员抵达现场后,正准备抬出压在巴士下的男子时,群众对他们投掷东西。印度男子过后当场不治。
此次事件也造成10名警员和4名救护人员受伤,5辆警车、9辆民防车以及附近数量汽车遭损毁。
这是治安良好的新加坡自1969年以来发生的第二起暴乱,上次的种族暴动持续了一周。
警方指出在接下来将特别关注客工宿舍和外籍劳工主要聚集的地方。

从网民们上载到网络的视频和图片可见到数百名南亚群众聚集意外现场,一些人更用棍子和垃圾桶砸破私人巴士的玻璃窗。一些视频也显示一些车辆起火燃烧,警车也被暴民推翻。
网民纷纷对外籍肇事感到气愤,也有人认为这是对政府过去大量引进外籍劳工政策的当头棒喝。
副总理张志贤和代人力部长陈川仁皆呼吁大家等待警方的调查结果,不要做无端猜测或煽动种族情绪。
据新加坡刑事法典,持危险武器参与暴乱者一旦被定罪将面对10年监禁以及面对鞭刑。
去年底,中国籍巴士司机因不满薪资待遇发动罢工行动,同样引起新加坡举国上下广泛关注。
当时,新加坡政府表示不容许外国人破坏本国法律,严惩罢工者,带头罢工的其中四人遭 监禁,29人遣返。
